Crew members and parents:
We use a phone service to contact our members for reminders or to convey late-breaking news regarding meetings. This service, known as “One Call” allows us to make approximately 90 calls simultaneously. The service also allows us to text to you, but this requires that you specifically allow this text to come to your phone. This is a Federal regulation to prevent general text solicitations to be made on your mobile phone.
Please take a minute to authorize this texting. It will be a great help to us and will get you instant information on the rare occasions that we will use it to convey Crew information to you. All you need to do is the following:
From your mobile phone, send the word “alert” to the number 22300.

Mr. B tried to impersonate President Kennedy last night and challenged us last night to our version of “landing on the moon”. I volunteered to lead this project and am following up to see who wants to be a part of the effort to make an internet link to the middle of nowhere. However, for now we need to get it up and running and a good practice run would be from here to Scout camp. I need anybody who wants to be a part of this to send me an email at masonman@imonmail.com. There will be lots of parts to this project ………some will require more of a time commitment than others and some might be difficult, but then again that is why we do it.
Thanks
Mason McCune

Reminder: There is NO Crew meeting this weekend, even though it’s the third Sunday of the month. This is because some of the Crew members and leaders are off to Lake Mille Lacs for our first-ever ice fishing extravaganza. While we’re there, we’ll be reviewing various wilderness water purification techniques. I thought I’d share the following tidbit with you from Dr. Tilton, who has a large influence on much of the wilderness medicine curriculum that we use:
How long should water boil in order to guarantee freedom from pathogens? At 14,000 feet, water boils at 85.6 degrees Celsius. Your water will be safe to drink at 14,000 as long as the water reaches a rolling boil. It does not have to boil for a certain amount of time. In fact, water boils at 19,000 feet at 80.9 degrees Celsius, and the same rule applies there. Your water needs only roll in a boil to be safe to drink.
Finally, some of you may enjoy viewing the video at the link below……it’s a little peak at what we’ll be doing this weekend:

Choose one of three pistol shooting sessions on this coming Friday, January 13th. During each session, several shooters will be “zeroing” in our new pistols. For these sessions, only .22 caliber pistols and revolvers will be used. Participants must be currently registered members of the Crew who have successfully completed a basic firearms course. http://www.eventbrite.com/event/2754056457
Join members of the radio club W0VCK on March 31st as we look inside various electrical devices to see how they work. Plan on tearing open TVs, computers, printers, cash registers and more. Participants will have the opportunity to have fun with a component scavenger hunt and extract parts to make new devices. Learn from club members how to become a radio operator. http://www.eventbrite.com/event/2754210919

The Crew takes advantage of the CR Schools Spring Break each year to visit the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to snowboard, ski, snowmobile, dog sled, ice skate, etc. Participants will primarily ski/board at Keystone, Breckenridge and A-Basin. I host the event at my place in Keystone, so housing is free. Individuals are responsible for their personal equipment, a share of groceries and transportation and lift tickets.
Crew members must have earned a Venture Bronze award in order to participate (any Bronze, any time, one-time only). I will discuss the event more fully at the next Crew meeting. In the meantime, you can sign up for one of the 8 tickets at:

We quickly reviewed the process of signing up for Crew events last night………..so quickly that I want to make sure everyone understands how to reserve a spot on the various upcoming events. The Crew uses a reservation system called “Eventbrite”. This is a system used by many organizations, often to sell tickets on line. However, the Crew uses the system only as a reservation system. Events will always be listed as “free”, since tickets sold on the site (such as concert or theatre tickets) pay a commission. If there is a charge for the event, you will be advised of that through email communications. There are several ways to sign up for events:
1. Go to www.eventbrite.com and click on the arrow “Search for Events in CR”
2. Go to www.bsatroop766.org and scroll down to their calendar (Troop and Crew events are both listed)
3. Go to the link that I periodically send out related to a specific event.
There are several upcoming events that you will be interested in: All eighth graders, members new to the Crew, and anyone participating in the Alaska High Adventure should sign up for the Wilderness First Aid Event being held on February 17-19. Also, keep in mind that Crews attending any of the BSA High Adventure Bases (i.e. Philmont, Sea Base, etc.) need to have members certified in Wilderness First Aid. You can sign up for this event here: http://wfa2012.eventbrite.com
The 2012 shooting season is beginning to ramp up with many sessions scheduled for Webelos and Scouts. You asked for it………you got it! There was strong interest expressed by Crew members in learning how to treat gunshot wounds. Apparently some of you believe that the end of the Mayan calendar will be accompanied by a lot of gun shots.
So………………..come to the V2K meeting on Sunday at 6 PM at the Ikes to learn how to treat a variety of gun related injuries. We have several volunteers who will be presenting a variety of simulated injuries for you to treat. Chief Nesslage (Hiawatha Fire & Rescue) will be leading this clinic. This should be one of the most interesting meetings of the year, and a good reminder of our upcoming Wilderness First Aid event in February. See you Sunday.
Mr. B

I have opened a pistol shooting session for this coming Friday night (January 6th). You may choose from 6 PM, 7 PM or 8 PM sessions. Crew members who are currently registered and who have previously complete a basic firearm course may register. Eighth Graders may reserve a spot if you have completed your application to the Crew. Don’t have an application? Go ahead and register……I’ll have apps at the Ikes for you to fill out.

The Crew is about to step into the very busy January/February shooting program. I need your help to make this the best program we can run for our young shooters. I have posted a bunch of shooting opportunities in BB gun, air rifle and archery on Eventbrite (I’ll be posting Crew events soon). Please take a look at your calendars and enter your sign-ups before school starts up again. Many of you may want to simplify your transportation logistics by coaching when siblings are also signed up. That’s usually a good idea, but keep in mind that I prefer that let you not coach a brother/sister and you will be assigned to shooters you don’t have to live with!
Crew members, we will sometimes shoot pistols following the last session for young shooters. To shoot pistols, you must be a registered member of the Crew and have taken a class sponsored by the Crew. If you are uncertain as to your status, send me an email and I’ll let you know where you stand.

Crew Members:
Paintball in December? A bunch of you thought that was a good idea and we had a nice turn-out yesterday at the Ikes. I’m sure that was our last outing for 2011. How early will 2012 start? Probably not until spring, unless this is a permanent weather shift!! Check out the CSSC Face Book page for pictures.
The Crew has a packed January agenda, causing a conflict with Sunday meeting dates. As it now stands, there is no meeting on January 1st and on January 15th many of you will be in Mille Lacs ice fishing. Many of you need January meeting dates to wrap up advancement requirements. So, we will alter our January schedule to feature regular Crew meetings on January 8th and 22nd.
