RE: Wilderness First Aid
Ladies and Gentlemen: We are only a few days from our Wilderness First Aid weekend. Many of you have expectations resulting from your participation last year and persons new to the event may be wondering what to bring to the event. This year’s event will be different than last year’s in several ways. Please read the following sections carefully so that you will be prepared to participate fully in the activities. The attached permission form must be brought to the event in order for you to participate. Unless prior arrangements have been made, first time participants will need to bring $60 and repeat participants will need to bring $30.
ALL PARTICIPANTS: This event combines classroom with outdoor sessions. You should be prepared to be outside for periods of up to two hours. In this class, we actually hope to have terrible weather so we’ll be outside no matter what is falling out of the sky. In this setting, this means that you will be not just outdoors, but possibly in deep snow. This means IN DEEP SNOW, not walking on trails. You are likely to be kneeling or sitting in snow as well. Unfortunately, in the real world people need care in inconvenient settings. That’s what this class is about. So, it’s in that context that I provide the following equipment list:
1. Personal toiletries
2. Towel
3. Sleeping bag or bedding for a twin bed
4. Appropriate winter clothing (coat, inner layers, hat, gloves, waterproof pants, etc.)
5. Relaxing clothing/shoes for the lodge
6. Notebook and writing instrument
7. Watch with second hand or digital seconds display
8. Boots appropriate for snow and expected conditions
9. Electronics (IPODS, MP3s) may be used in your rooms at night, but no TVs please
REPEAT PARTICIPANTS: Participants who have taken the class before will have slightly different responsibilities. You should be prepared to provide leadership in scenarios that may occur over the weekend. You will be adequately prepared if you are equipped to be a member of the back country ski patrol. To be effective leaders, you will need to come prepared with additional equipment and supplies:
1. Backpack (not day pack or book bag)
2. Basic camping gear appropriate for winter (no tent)
3. Fire starting gear
4. Survival snacks for 3 people (compact high-energy snacks for three people)
5. Water bottle and cup
6. Length of cord/rope
WHAT NO ONE NEEDS TO BRING: The class supplies many of the items you will be using for the class. DO NOT BRING the following items:
1. All food (except the snacks mentioned above) will be provided
2. All first aid supplies and equipment will be provided
3. All class materials except a notebook and writing instruments will be provided
LOGISTICS: The group will meet at the Kennedy High School parking lot at 5:30 PM on Friday for departure to Camp Wakonda. We will be staying in the Allsop Outdoor Education Center. The group will return mid-to-late Sunday afternoon. We will need adult drivers to help transport participants to and from the camp.

We have set the date for our next pistol shooting class to be February 13th at the IKES. In order to be eligible for this class, you must have completed a prior class in either rifle or shotgun and be a current member of Crew 2000. The class will be on the 13th, with sessions at the range on the 14th. The class will begin at 9 AM and conclude mid-afternoon. You can indicate your interest in the class by going to Eventbrite and signing up for the shooting session on the 14th. In other words, if you sign up for the session on the 14th, I’ll know that you want to be included in the class the day before. If you are currently certified in pistol, I would recommend that you sit through the class again if your schedule permits.

Please make sure that you reserve the weekend of February 5th - 7th for the 2010 edition of Wilderness First Aid.
This is the certification recommended for Scout groups participating in High Adventures and is required for groups attending events hosted at Philmont and some other Scout reservations. This is nothing like any first aid class you have completed in the past - this isn’t “scratch and dent” first aid. It is the most complete certification that you can earn in wilderness-related first aid and is very hands-on, with realistic scenarios and injuries which you will learn to treat.
The Crew instructors conduct this class for Troop members who are at least currently in the 8th grade, and parents, leaders and members of the Venture Crew. The course faculty members are certified instructors in a variety of disciplines, including Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Responder, CPR, AED, Standard First Aid, When Help is Delayed, Sports First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and Epi Pen Administration. If you have taken this class in the past, you are encouraged to attend this session as a review and to participate in the scenarios. We subsidize the cost of this class so that everyone can participate. The cost for first time attendees for the course, food and lodging is $60. Second time attendees pay only $30.
The class will be conducted on the weekend of February 5-7 at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center at Camp Wakonda. We will be using the Center for both the classes and housing/meals. Upon arrival on Friday night, you will receive a general briefing and begin to learn some skills related to observing and taking vital signs. Classes will begin on Saturday and continue through the early afternoon on Sunday.
We hope that many of you who are in 8th grade will eventually join us as members of the Venture Crew, where our motto is “Taking it to the Limit”. We prove that every year in the activities that we conduct and the places we visit. If you are willing to join us in places like the Alaska Wilderness and the Australian Outback, we expect you to be prepared to handle anything that happens. Taking this class is the first step on your journey to becoming self reliant in the most exotic places on the planet.
Isn’t it time you decided to “Take it to the Limit?”
Call or e-mail me to reserve a spot in the class.

The forecast sounds like this is going to be a great weekend to be inside. We have many reservations for our BB program on Friday night and the archery sessions on Sunday. Unfortunately, I can’t run these sessions all by myself and, so far, I have only one person who has indicated willingness to help. I need to hear from you that you want to help with these sessions by tonight, or I’ll have to cancel them.
Who can help? Any youth who has completed the rifle class can volunteer for the BB sessions. You can sign up for one or all sessions. Archery sessions are coached by youth who have already been selected and trained to be archery coaches. I can give archery coaches a ride to Palo and back if you work all the sessions. In each case, you need to send me an e-mail indicating your interest so that I can coordinate the staffing.

V2K Members and Guests:
There are several important developments regarding the V2K schedule that you should make note of:
1. The meeting dates are being altered for January due to a special program opportunity. Our special guest will be Brenda Hack.
Brenda is an Anusara-Inspired yoga teacher who has been teaching for the past 4 years and has been a yoga student for 8. She conducts sessions for sports teams (including golf and cross-country) and is an active instructor through-out the Cedar Rapids community. We will have special sessions led by Brenda at the IKES on both January 10th and 17th. The practice of Anusara Yoga can be broadly categorized into three parts: Attitude, Alignment, and Action. Brenda will be applying these principles to some of our activities, including the Shooting Sports !!!! 2. Speaking of Shooting Sports, the January schedule is posted to the V2K calendar (www.venture2000.org.). These sessions are filling up fast — you must go to the EventBrite site to register and ensure that you have a spot. 3. The Chestnut Mountain event is also posted on the EventBrite site for your registration. Tom Laing will be coordinating this event for V2k members. I will be gone that weekend preparing for the upcoming Wilderness First Aid weekend. 4. Check out the videos posted at the V2K website (go to the webpage and click on the video button at the top). There’s a great new video there produced by Fiedler Productions. 5, Eighth graders are invited to all of our regular upcoming events, so come on out and give us a test drive. Most of our eighth grader emails have been added to the V2K distribution list. You will receive these notices unless you ask to be removed from the list.
