Crew members: I received the note below from Jim Landis (Kevin’s father) this morning. I had asked Jim to keep us informed as to what we could do to help Kevin. While Kevin’s story is serious and sobering, Jim’s comments regarding “Being Prepared” are important to all of us. It was our own Crew members who made the decision several years ago to feature first aid as one of our core specialties. Kevin was one of the Crew officers sponsoring that decision. Since we don’t do anything in a half-hearted way, we have become a professional training center for skills you may need someday to save a life……perhaps even your own. If you are receiving this e-mail but are not yet in the Crew, you will be receiving an invitation to join the Crew in our annual in-the-field wilderness first aid training in the late winter. Plan to be part of it. The life you save could be your own.
Thanks Dave and all Crew 2000 for your prayers for Kevin, for the all injured, and for prayers for the first responders and caregivers who were able to save lives.
Responders from many small communities that morning did a superb job. They appeared well-trained and moved swiftly.
While Kevin is recovering from some severe injuries, he is doing well. Hilary, his girlfriend, is recovering as well. It is thankfully also my understanding the Mom and 3 children in the other vehicle are likewise recovering.
Kevin and Hilary will begin their freshman year at ISU and UNI, respectively, in January 2011.
The best thing Crew 2000 can do is to stay well-trained in first aid, communications and emergency response. You never know when you’ll need it.
Kevin and I both called upon our training to help him survive until help arrived. He was participative and assisted those who were helping him.
I’m sure I’ll catch-up with you once I’m back in the office in a few weeks. I’m going to take a few weeks off to ‘tag team’ with Nancy in helping with Kevin’s recovery once he gets home.
Peace- Jim Landis

Many of you are aware that our former Venture Crew 2000 member, Kevin Landis, was involved in a serious car accident as he travelled to Iowa State University to begin classes. I received the following prayer request from the Xavier High School Community today. Please continue to support Kevin and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they work through this very difficult period.
On Wednesday, August 18, Xavier alums Kevin Landis (X10) and Hillary Erickson (X10) were injured in a car accident after an oncoming van crossed the center line and hit their vehicle head on. Kevin and Hillary were on their way to Iowa State University where Kevin was to begin school this Fall. In all, six individuals were injured in the accident. Luckily, Hillary was treated and released the same day. Unfortunately, Kevin has a much longer road to recovery ahead of him.
Kevin was treated in the ICU from Wednesday through Saturday and has since been moved to the Orthopedic Floor at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He has significant damage to his elbow and broken bones in both legs. His internal injuries are subsiding. Due to the extent of his injuries, he will go to the St. Luke’s Extended Rehabilitation for up to 7 weeks and then will be going home. The hope is that he may be able to begin second semester at Iowa State.

The harmonica, also called a harp or mouth organ is played by blowing into it or drawing air out by placing your lips over individual holes (reed chambers) or multiple holes. The pressure caused by blowing or drawing air into the reed chambers causes a reed or multiple reeds to vibrate up and down creating sound. Each chamber has multiple, variable-tuned reeds which are secured at one end and loose on the other end, with the loose end vibrating and creating sound. The harmonica has anchored campfire and blues music for generations.
AND YOU CAN LEARN TO PLAY ONE ON SUNDAY The Crew has made a bulk purchase of Hohner harmonicas and you can buy your own for $5 at the meeting. We will have a high school student from Iowa City at the meeting to begin our harmonica journeys. His name is Seb……he is a Scout who has worked on the Camp Wakonda staff. We’ll see how it goes on this first attempt, then make appropriate future plans. Be there at the IKES at 6 PM for the start.

Aloha from the Hawaii delegation! We’ve put another High Adventure in the books and safely returned 17 persons from the Crew’s latest extravaganza in the islands. There were the usual moments that we will never be able to share (In order to protect the innocent….and our egos), but the pictures and movies will soon be available. There were many “firsts” on the trip, including the first shark caught on one of our trips (Richie), the most square footage of serious sunburn ever recorded and our first three sea urchin injuries. Looks like we’ll have to add marine first aid to our repertoire. For the second year in a row, we were able to set up our high-frequency radio - this time on the western shore of the Big Island in a 20 knot gale. It was really cool to hear Joe Lutgens calling the W0VCK call sign from 4000 miles away!
In other news, many of the Crew’s radio operators volunteered their time on Sunday to support the first-ever Camp Courageous Sprint Triathlon. We staffed thirteen intersections on the bike route and received many accolades from the planners regarding our services. The emergency services coordinator for Jones County told Joe Lutgens and I at the end of the event that they “couldn’t have done it without us”! We also learned today that our request to use a special call sign for the 100th Anniversary Camporee on September 17-19 has been approved. We will be able to use the call sign NOW to contact operators around the world. Watch for more news on this event. There’s still time to get your license for this event. Let me know if you need some help in getting that accomplished.
The next two Crew meetings will be important meetings that you won’t want to miss. On August 15th, we will be hosting a guest instructor at our first HARMONICA LESSON. I’ll bring the harmonicas. All you’ll need are your lips and lungs and $5 to buy your harmonica, Please note that we will not have a meeting on September 5th due to the Labor Day holiday, but we will have a meeting on September 12th, solely dedicated to Crew officer elections. You must check in with me if you plan on running for an elected position.
