Wilderness First Aid
Posted by email on January 7, 2010 Please make sure that you reserve the weekend of February 5th - 7th for the 2010 edition of Wilderness First Aid.
This is the certification recommended for Scout groups participating in High Adventures and is required for groups attending events hosted at Philmont and some other Scout reservations. This is nothing like any first aid class you have completed in the past - this isn’t “scratch and dent” first aid. It is the most complete certification that you can earn in wilderness-related first aid and is very hands-on, with realistic scenarios and injuries which you will learn to treat.
The Crew instructors conduct this class for Troop members who are at least currently in the 8th grade, and parents, leaders and members of the Venture Crew. The course faculty members are certified instructors in a variety of disciplines, including Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Responder, CPR, AED, Standard First Aid, When Help is Delayed, Sports First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and Epi Pen Administration. If you have taken this class in the past, you are encouraged to attend this session as a review and to participate in the scenarios. We subsidize the cost of this class so that everyone can participate. The cost for first time attendees for the course, food and lodging is $60. Second time attendees pay only $30.
The class will be conducted on the weekend of February 5-7 at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center at Camp Wakonda. We will be using the Center for both the classes and housing/meals. Upon arrival on Friday night, you will receive a general briefing and begin to learn some skills related to observing and taking vital signs. Classes will begin on Saturday and continue through the early afternoon on Sunday.
We hope that many of you who are in 8th grade will eventually join us as members of the Venture Crew, where our motto is “Taking it to the Limit”. We prove that every year in the activities that we conduct and the places we visit. If you are willing to join us in places like the Alaska Wilderness and the Australian Outback, we expect you to be prepared to handle anything that happens. Taking this class is the first step on your journey to becoming self reliant in the most exotic places on the planet.
Isn’t it time you decided to “Take it to the Limit?”
